A lot of highs and lows this past weekend for sure. It started out with the Thursday night classic Civil War match up between Oregon and Oregon st. What a game! I only got to see the second half but that game turned out to be an instant classic. These two teams have been playing each other for over 110 years and this was the first time the match up meant the winner would go to the Rose Bowl… one of the greatest bowl games in history. Oregon pulled out the game in a very close one, but what a game it was! Oregon used their running game to really work to its advantage and Oregon St. did the same, but the Ducks outlasted the Beavers for the win, the Pac-10 title, and Rose Bowl Berth. Oregon will now face Ohio St. on January 1st for the Rose Bowl crown. Oregon St. will play BYU in the Las Vegas Bowl on December 22nd. Good season for both teams, the Ducks were just a little bit better.
On the other side of things, Nebraska lost a heart breaker to Texas on Saturday night. A great defensive battle by both teams, Nebraska led 12-10 late in the 4th quarter until the last play of the game when Texas hit a 40+ yard FG to win the game 13-12. It was the third loss of the season for the Huskers by 2 points or less. Needless to say, the Huskers played very well (despite offensive short comings and a couple of questionable calls), coming into the game as 15 point underdogs. Ndamukong Suh led the Huskers with 12 tackles (7 for loss) and 4 1/2 sacks… putting him up on the top 5 in the Heisman trophy race. He just won the Bronko Nagurski Trophy which is given to the best defensive player in all of college football. Overall, a decent season for Nebraska. I still feel like they should have won the Virginia Tech and Iowa St. games… and even the Texas game! But 9-4 is still pretty good. Especially since i predicted that our offense would be down this year and our defense would have to lead the team… I also predicted that we would win the Big 12 north this year and set up a run at the Big 12 and national title next season in 2010. Well, they almost took the Big 12 title this year. We’ll see if the offense can get things rolling in the off season and come back better next year. The defense is losing Suh, but they have a lot of talent from this year’s D coming back. As for the bowl game, I think it will be a good game against Arizona. I see another low scoring affair, but I think Nebraska will come out on top. I’ll say 20-17 Nebraska. That game will be on December 30th in San Diego, CA in the Holliday Bowl. Should be a fun one to watch.
The NFL just keeps getting more crazy each week. One thing we know is this: THE CHIEFS ARE WHO WE THOUGHT THEY WERE! And that is a bad team… hopefully they can pull off a couple of upsets agains the Bills and Browns at home. It’s sad when beating the Bills and Browns at home are an upset, but that’s what it is this year. How about the Raiders over the Steelers? What a crazy game where the Raiders scored 21 points in the 4th to pull out the win. The Pats lost another one, this time to the Dolphins. The Colts stay undefeated and so do the Saints… but the Saints needed OT to maintain their perfect record in another crazy game! The Seahawks pulled out a nice win agains the 49ers and are now in a tie for second with them in the NFC west. Hopefully the Seahawks can keep winning and end the season with at least a .500 record. The Cardinals had a very nice win over the Vikings in what could be a home field factor later on, we shall see… And Green Bay stayed ahead in the NFC wild card race and creeped closer to the Vikings in the NFC North. The Ravens, with the loss to the Packers, are still in the wild card hunt in the AFC, but they hurt there chances. It was good for them that Pittsburgh lost. It should be a fun watch the rest of the season…
And lastly, all of my fantasy football teams are still alive going into the first week of playoffs! So hopefully I can make a nice playoff run in all of my leagues. Enjoy the week and enjoy some football when you can!
